SUMMARY:Hot Topics – The Future of Investigative Journalism
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick Here to Register for this Zoom Program\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Conversation with Two Leading Voices on the Suncoast\nIn an era of rapid change, shrinking newsrooms, and growing threats to transparency, investigative journalism has never been more essential. Print newspapers have traditionally had the time and money to stick to a story, but shrinking readership and exodus of advertising dollars have largely crippled their ability to investigate local issues. Other organizations are attempting to fill that void, such as a community news collaborative or an internet only newspaper. Join us for a program exploring where the field is headed and why strong, independent reporting matters now more than ever.\nJoin us for an engaging and timely discussion about the challenges and opportunities ahead for investigative journalism, and why strong local reporting remains vital to a healthy democracy. Bring friends, neighbors, and anyone who cares about the future of news.\nWe are proud to welcome two distinguished journalists who are shaping the future of accountability reporting in our region:\nEmily Le Coz\nExecutive Editor-in-Chief, Suncoast Searchlight\nEmily Le Coz leads Suncoast Searchlight, a nonprofit newsroom dedicated to producing investigative and explanatory journalism for Sarasota, Manatee, and DeSoto counties. Under her leadership, the organization produces original reporting and collaborates with print, digital, television, and radio partners to expand public access to high‑impact journalism.\nEmily previously spent five years at USA TODAY as an investigative reporter and editor, guiding some of the outlet’s most ambitious national projects. Before that, she led GateHouse Media’s national data and investigations team and served as deputy investigations editor at the Sarasota Herald‑Tribune, where she contributed to the award‑winning Bias on the Bench series.\nDawn Kitterman\nInvestigative Reporter, The Bradenton Times\nDawn Kitterman covers local government, transparency, and community issues for The Bradenton Times, earning a reputation as one of Manatee County’s most persistent watchdog reporters. Her work has exposed irregularities involving former County Administrator Scott Hopes, uncovered problems with the veterans housing project, and provided clear, accessible analysis of candidates and elections.\nDawn is known for her meticulous research, compelling storytelling, and unwavering commitment to keeping the public informed about decisions that affect their daily lives.\n
