According to the recent census nearly 20% of Manatee County residents identify as Hispanic or Latino.  Of the families served by Manatee District Schools, over 1/3 are Hispanic/Latino. 

What is the history of Manatee County’s Spanish speaking population? 

How does Manatee County School District support success of all ELL (English Language Learners) students?

What dual language programs are now in Manatee schools (Charter Schools are public schools)?

What are some examples of current and a proposed dual language programs, including those of English speaking students? 

Join this Zoom program and learn more about Manatee Schools and the opportunities there. 

  • Luz Corcuera, M.A., Executive Director of UnidosNow, will provide an overview, historical and current, of the varied demographics of Spanish speakers in Manatee County, needs and resources.
     
  • Debra Estes, M.A., Director ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages), Migrant, Federal Programs, will share the Manatee School District’s efforts to support achievement of ELL (English Language Learners) students.
     
  • Ruby Zickafoose, Ph.D., MSA Charter, will describe their proposed PreK through Grade 5 Arts-infused Dual Language (Two-Way Developmental Bilingual Education) program, as an example of innovative efforts to improve literacy.
