LWVMC Annual Meeting and Luncheon – Standing Up for Our Rights

Legal and political challenges continue to shape how our democracy functions. The League of Women Voters uses litigation as one of the tools to keep elections fair, accessible, and transparent. But what does that work really look like behind the scenes?

We are thrilled to welcome Cecile Scoon, President Emerita of the League of Women Voters of Florida, as our featured speaker. Few people have her depth of experience navigating the full journey from harmful legislation to courtroom action. She has worked on the front lines of advocacy, collaborated with civil rights partners, helped determine when and why the League has legal standing, and represented the Florida League in major cases. Cecile will share what happens before a lawsuit is filed, how decisions are made, and what factors shape whether to appeal. Her insights come straight from the trenches.

A respected civil rights attorney, Cecile M. Scoon, Esq. led the League of Women Voters of Florida from 2021–2025, a period marked by intense voting rights challenges, redistricting, and other critical issues. She made history as the first Black woman to serve as president of the Florida League and previously served as First Vice President.

Cecile is a graduate of Harvard University and the University of Virginia School of Law. She began her career as an assistant staff judge advocate in the U.S. Air Force and is now the managing principal of Peters & Scoon Attorneys at Law in Panama City. She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and a life member of the Bay County Branch of the NAACP.

This promises to be an enlightening and fascinating event. Bring friends, family, and anyone interested in understanding how democracy is protected in real time.
