LWVMC Annual Meeting and Luncheon – Standing Up for Our Rights

Get an insider’s look at the League of Women Voters’ most significant state and national lawsuits with our featured speaker, Cecile Scoon, President Emerita of the League of Women Voters of Florida. Few leaders have her depth of experience guiding the League from standing up against harmful legislation to hard-fought and effective courtroom action. Cecile has worked on the front lines of advocacy, collaborated with civil rights partners, helped determine when and why the League has legal standing, and represented the Florida League in major cases.

Cecile will walk us through what happens before a lawsuit is filed, how the League decides to move forward, and what factors shape the decision to appeal. She’ll share firsthand insights from battles over redistricting, returning citizens’ rights, attacks on vote‑by‑mail and voter registration, and restrictions on organizations that help voters register. She will also highlight current national challenges to federal policies that limit voter registration at naturalization ceremonies, threaten the National Voter Registration Act, and undermine fair access to the ballot.

You’ll learn how the League uses a powerful combination of legal strategy, coalition partnerships, research, and public education to defend voting rights and strengthen democracy. This program will show how litigation fits into the League’s broader mission—and how these cases shape the future of voter access and civic participation.

A respected civil rights attorney, Cecile led the League of Women Voters of Florida from 2021–2025, a period marked by intense voting rights challenges and historic redistricting fights. She also made history as the first Black woman to serve as president of the Florida League.

This promises to be an enlightening and inspiring event. Bring friends, family, and anyone who wants to understand how democracy is protected in real time.
