Unite and Rise 8.5

A Campaign to Defend Democracy

Are we really in a Constitutional crisis? What can we do?

The League defines a Constitutional Crisis as:
“When the executive, the legislative, or judiciary branches cannot or will not adequately protect the US Constitution, when there are explicit attempts to dismantle a functional democracy within any of the three branches, or when any level of federal government takes action to destroy democratic institutions in a manner that intentionally or purposefully jeopardizes the US Constitution.”

When these events occur, the constitution is deemed at the highest serious risk and warrants full-scale action by ALL of us to preserve and protect democratic institutions and civil society. The League of Women voters has launched an initiative to mobilize 8.5 million voters to defend our Constitution and the Rule of Law through advocacy, civic education, and engagement.

What can we do?

Call your elected officials and hold them accountable.

  • “Turn Up the Heat” on elected officials: Connect directly with your representatives on the issues that matter via Town Halls and other opportunities.
  • Protect democracy: Tell your Senators to oppose the anti-voter SAVE Act. If passed into law, one of the largest groups of people who could be disenfranchised from voting is married women who changed their last name.
  • Tell Congress not to gut crucial programs like Medicaid.
  • Raise your voice about illegal deportations: join mobilizations around immigrant rights and due process with organizations like the Florida Immigrant Coalition, Immigration Justice Coalition of Sarasota, the LWVMC Social Issues Action Team.

Take part in the League’s nationwide Unite and Rise 8.5 campaign to mobilize 8.5 million voters using the power of voter engagement as a cornerstone of our democracy.

  • Act locally: Join local organizations like our local League to act on the issues that matter in your community.
  • Show your support to “Defend the Constitution and the Rule of Law” by displaying a yard sign from the League of Women Voters of Manatee County (LWVMC). [SEE BELOW to Order Yard Signs]
  • Sign up to receive emails from the LWVMC about upcoming rallies and civic engagement events.

Unite and Rise will fight for our democracy on multiple fronts, from the courts to the streets. More actions will be outlined in the near future. Find out more or join this campaign, email info@lwvmanatee.org.

In this extraordinary moment, we cannot proceed with business as usual. ALL Americans — no matter who you voted for in 2024 — need to come together, stand united, and fight back to save our democracy. We cannot afford to fail the generations to come.

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT OF DEMOCRACY WITH A LWVMC  YARD SIGN!

Stand tall for the principles that make our nation strong with this bold “Uphold Our Constitution” yard sign. Let your neighbors know that protecting our rights and preserving the values of democracy matters now more than ever. Inspire others to stand up for the foundation that unites us all!

Please place an order below and we will arrange a time and location with you for drop off or pick up.

The sign is free. We encourage you to donate $5 per sign to help cover the cost of the printing and stakes.
